While I'd agree that sustainability must be framed in a broad discussion than looks beyond architectural concerns, it doesn't necessarily follow that sustainable urbanism is therefore an oxymoron. Cities are both the centres of economic demand that underlie environmental impacts, and the centres of command and control in the present capitalist economy. Therefore any significant change in socio-economic structure must be urban in nature.<br /><br />Our economic system is shifting paradigm- to an information economy where cities are absolutely the most significant part, as the centres of information production and consumption.
